The Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs has called for the establishment of an open prison for female inmates.
This comes as the First Lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa visited Chikurubi Female Prison where she called for improvement of living conditions for female inmates.
Connemara Prison is an open prison that has seen a number of male inmates benefiting from the facility.
Some of the inmates who benefited from the open prison facilities include former ZIFA president Rafik Khan, former president Canaan Banana, among others.
However, female inmates have never tasted such kind of facilities.
It is against this background that Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Cde Ziyambi Ziyambi said there is need for the construction of a female open prison.
The First Lady said women are a vulnerable group that requires special facilities in prison.
She called for the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to release funds to buy mattresses and ensure living conditions for women and children are improved.
Economic challenges faced by the country over the past decade have not spared the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS).
The open door policy by the ZPCS has also enabled the corporate world to partner them in addressing some of the challenges.
