The government has been called upon to put in place policies that guarantee free and easy access to sanitary wear for women.
Female inmates at Chikurubi prison received sanitary wear as part of the World Menstrual Hygiene Day.
Dr Rita Nyamupinga from Femprist, an organisation that facilitated the donation, said it is imperative for relevant authorities to assist female inmates as well as the general populace with sanitary wear as it is beyond the reach of many.
“Prisoners need to be remembered because some of them are neglected by their families and they face various challenges,” she said.
Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Deputy Commissioner General Fadzai Mupure applauded the gesture by Femprist.
Diplomats who graced the event said female inmates must be supported just like any other citizen as it is their constitutional right.
The World Menstruation Hygiene Day is aimed at highlighting the importance of good menstrual hygiene and how the issue can be integrated into global and national policies and programmes.
