Electrical and telecommunication cable thefts have increased in Matabeleland North districts of Tsholotsho and Umguza.

Police are looking for two alleged cable thieves Admire Sibanda and Mthokozisi Nkomo who stole electrical copper cables  at Dilkosh in Nyamandlovu.

In another case, Mgcini Ngwenya and Raphael Ndlovu allegedly stole telecommunication cables at Godzo in Tsholotsho.

ZESA Group Stakeholder Relations Manager Mr Fullard Gwasira said such thefts have caused a lot of power disruptions country wide.

“Vandalism has costed millions of dollars to the economy, industry, mining, agriculture and homes. This retards network growth through ZESA having to continuously replace equipment that had already been put in place. The disadvantage is that it causes customer inconvenience through long periods of power outages,” said Mr Gwasira.

Companies such as ZESA and TelOne have lost thousands of dollars’ worth of telecommunications equipment, mainly copper cables due to theft and vandalism.
