diamonds 20.10.jpgCabinet has welcomed the outcome of the recently held World Diamond Council 7th Annual Meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia, and has expressed commitment to ensuring that auctioning of diamonds commences immediately.

The endorsement of the diamond certification by cabinet follows the successful meeting in Russia, where it was agreed that Zimbabwe should resume diamond exports under a supervised export mechanism, paving way for the sale of the Chiadzwa gems.

Speaking soon after a cabinet meeting, Mines and Mining Development Minister Obert Mpofu said cabinet fully backs the sale of diamonds, adding that all local stakeholders in the marketing of diamonds are being engaged to ensure that the process is done in a transparent manner.

“There has been an outstanding support shown by cabinet. We have put all the necessary mechanism in place and the marketing will be done in collaboration with all key departments including the ministry of Finance, ZIMRA, police and MMCZ,” said Cde Mpofu.

Minister Mpofu expressed optimism that the auctioning of the diamonds will help stimulate key sectors of the economy and ensure that the economy records a positive growth rate in the near future.

The export of diamonds is set to commence early next month and KP monitor, Mr. Abbey Chikane is expected to visit Zimbabwe to certify the first batch of stockpiled gems.
