Zanu PF members in Bulawayo have endorsed the party’s First Secretary and President, Cde Robert Mugabe as the party’s presidential candidate in the forthcoming elections.
The decision is part of the resolutions from Bulawayo which will be tabled at the party’s 12th Annual National People’s Conference that will be held in that city early next month.
The proposal to second President Mugabe’s candidature was made by Cde Killion Sibanda, who is the party’s Provincial Vice Chairman, and was seconded by the women’s league and the youth wing in the province.
Briefing the Provincial Coordinating Committee meeting on the progress made in the preparation for the conference, Politburo member, Dr Sikhanyiso Ndlovu said most of the logistical issues have been delt with and the party is working on final preparations.
Meanwhile, farmers in Bulawayo have started benefitting from the Presidential Special Well Wishers Input Scheme, where over 150 tonnes of maize seed have been distributed.
Bulawayo, which has over 12 000 hectares of arable land, will see urban and peri-urban farmers start planting ahead of the farming season to supplement their food.
Speaking at a handover ceremony of the seed, Governor and Resident Minister of the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Cde Cain Mathema challenged the beneficiaries to put the seed to good use by taking advantage of the current rains.
Cde Mathema thanked the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe for the timely distribution of inputs, which he said will boost food production in city and surrounding areas.
He however advised the city fathers to work with farmers from the onset of the farming season to avoid the slashing of crops, which is usually due to violation of city laws.
He further challenged banks to avail loans to farmers especially those in the horticulture sector.
