FIFA President, Sepp Blatter says world sports federations should trust the capabilities of Africa to host major sporting events so that activities can be spread beyond South Africa.Â
Blatter said while FIFA believes in the capacity of Africa in hosting world events, other world sports organisation should invest confidence in Africa’s ability to hosting world class tournaments.
He also challenged African states to take the initiative so that Africa does not only mean South Africa.
“The 2010 World Cup was to show that us in FIFA we believe in the capacities of Africa and other big organisations should also have trust in Africa’s capacity to host world events but it is also up to African states to take the initiative,’ Blatter said.
Only South Africa has had the privilege to host global sporting events such as the Rugby World Cup in 1995, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and now the IOC 123rd Congress, which the IOC is bringing to Africa for the first time despite the tournament being is in its 117year history.
The congress to be graced by international sports administrators, royalty and heads of states will decide and announce the 2018 winter Olympic host city where Germany, France and Korea are in the running.
It will also elect the new IOC President.
