tendai biti ed 18-10-10.jpgMinister of Finance, Mr. Tendai Biti, has cleared the air on the US$45 million agricultural facility for the 2011 summer season, saying the announced figure is readily available but is specifically meant for communal and A1 farmers only.

In an interview with ZBC News, Minister Biti revealed that the allocated US$45 million for the summer season is in place, adding that what is left is for the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development to implement the facility.

Minister Biti was however quick to say the facility is targeted towards the communal farmers and other small scale farmers only.

He said his Ministry is at an advanced stage in negotiations with key financial institutions to establish a facility that will cater for A2 farmers.

Turning to GMB’s failure to pay farmers, Mr. Biti said due to market liberalisation, government has not budgeted for all maize being delivered but will only chip in as the buyer of the last resort.

However, some analysts have doubted the wisdom of liberalising the buying of maize as food is a security issue.
