Women from Binga have been commended for taking advantage of their proximity to the Zambezi River to engage in fishing projects for self-sustenance.
The women have established fishing co-operatives and are processing, packaging and branding their catch for improved marketing.
Officiating at the International Womenâ€™s Day commemorations held at Siyachilaba Centre in Binga under the theme â€˜Empower Women in Rural Areas – Eradicate Poverty and Hungerâ€™, the Minister of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development, Dr Olivia Muchena, challenged Zimbabwean women to emulate Binga women and use their competitive advantage by exploiting available economic resources.
Addressing the same gathering, the United Nations Resident Co-ordinator, Mr Alain Noudehou commended government for empowering women through gender mainstreaming and availing micro-finance to support projects.
He also said it is critical to support rural women to access urban markets.
