Binga residents are calling for easy access to fishing licences as a way of empowering them to economically benefit from fishing activities in the Zambezi river.

The construction of Kariba dam led to the flooding of the Zambezi valley and the displacement of the Tonga people in Binga to areas that are not good for farming.

With plenty of water and fish at their disposal, hopes were high that they will  benefit from the natural resource only to be dampened by a prohibitive licensing regime.

A representative of Binga residents, Mr Partson Sibanda said this has deprived them of what could be their only source of livelihood.

Binga is a tourist resort which could make a meaningful contribution to government’s revenue inflows while improving the lives of the residents if the area of fishing as an economic venture is fully addressed.
