Kimberly Bhunu stormed into the ITF 18 and under quarter finals after a 6-4, 6-3 straight sets win over South African 5th seed Myah Petchey today.
Bhunu stood tall in ITF 18 and under action at Harare Sports Club this afternoon with the top Zimbabwean junior player winning in straight sets.
She won the first set 6-4, before wrapping up the game with a 6-3 second set win.
The victory propelled an aggressive Bhunu into the last 8 keeping alive hopes in the grade 3 tournament that has had highly ranked players registering for the 3rd leg.
Bhunu now faces her biggest test in the quarters when she clashes with the tournament’s top seed from Poland Weronika Bszak who breezed into the last 8 following a 6-1, 6-2 win.
In the doubles Rufaro Magarira and her doubles partner Linda Eloundou progressed into the semi-finals following a walkover.
In the boys’ category winner of the first two legs Pierre Malan eased into the quarters following a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win over Madagascar’s Toky Ranaivo.
Top seed Eric Vanshelboim marched into the last after a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Aly Shokeir of Egypt.
Action resumes on Thursday with Zimbabwe hoping for Bhunu to stir an upset against Bszak.
