Barracudas Swimming Club proved their mettle as they were crowned the Matabeleland Junior Swimming Champions after dominating in both the boys and girls categories.
Barracudas collected 17 gold, 18 silver and 12 bronze for a total of 47 medals in the tournament held at the Bulawayo City Pools where about 100 swimmers from seven clubs took part.
School of Swimming was second with a total of 25 medals comprising 9 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze, while third place was taken by Stingrays Swimming Academy.
The annual tournament also saw a number of longstanding Matabeleland records being broken with Barracudas’ Onye Onovo contributing in three of those while Tichatonga Makaya of Stingrays managed two.
Matabeleland Amateur Swimming Board spokesperson Thomas Werrett revealed that his province is now geared towards the national championships and a Matabeleland team is set to be selected soon.
Matabeleland has expressed confidence that they will put up a competitive performance and expectations of winning the nationals are high.
