Haiti will not be admitted into the African Union (AU) at the next summit to be held in Kigali, Rwanda.
An AU statement, issued following media reports concerning Haiti’s presumed admission, indicated that in accordance to Article 29.1 of the AU Constitutive Act, only African states can join the continental body.
The AU has made it clear that given the importance that it accords to the African diaspora, it has developed strong cooperation with sister states such as Haiti in the Caribbean region and citizens of African descent around the world.
AU has welcomed the Haiti President and the Prime Minister to its summits in the past as special guests and the continental body sent a high level delegation to haiti’s 200th anniversary in 2004.
In 2012, AU had a special summit to deepen the relationship between the AU and the African diaspora.
