The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) preparatory meetings being hosted by Zimbabwe are currently underway in Victoria Falls as members of the union seek to come up with a common position ahead of the forthcoming World Radio Communication (WRC) conference scheduled for 2019.

The preparatory meetings which will be held from today until the 7th of June will see delegates deliberating on issues around radio communication such as liberalisation of radio airwaves and promotion of radio communication technologies.

WRC conferences are held every three to four years and are administered by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

For the first time, the global event will be hosted on the African soil in Egypt.

The WRC is mandated to among other things revise the radio regulations, the international treaty governing the use of radio frequency spectrum and geostationary-satellite.
