thomas mbewe artist.jpgA local artist has added his voice to calls for western countries to lift illegal sanctions they imposed on Zimbabwe, through pencil and ink.

The piece of abstract art titled “Down With Sanctions” depicts Zimbabweans’ fight against the illegal sanctions and the double standards exhibited by the British, their allies in the west and some locals.

The Goromonzi-based 51-year old artist, Thomas Mbewe’s poster takes the form of the map of Zimbabwe with men, animals and places showing the many facets and effects of the illegal embargo.

“The white man with doves wants to represent peace but if you look at his hair, these are snakes which represent their deceit and vile character….”

Mbewe, who is a war veteran and former army officer, ventured into art in 1997.

He is also a poet and script writer.

Currently he is working on a thirty minute film titled “The Kasoro Battle”, which he says is a reflection of a seven day battle he undertook with three other cadres in Mtoko against Rhodesian forces.

The artist was among those who presented their poems at the national anti-sanctions petition campaign launch on the 2nd of March.
