The artificial insemination programme introduced in Uzumba constituency last year has started bearing fruit with the first calves having adapted well to the environment.

Introduced last year as part of improving the local cattle breed the artificial insemination programme has proved to be a success with 20 of the 39 cattle in the programme already having calves.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development responsible for livestock, Cde Paddy Zhanda said the programme is meant to empower local farmers.

Uzumba legislator, Cde Simbaneuta Mudarikwa said artificial insemination has a lot of benefits to cattle farmers.

The programme was introduced in three areas in the constituency namely Nhakiwa, Katiyo and Musanhi.
