raphael chikukwa2.jpgThe National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe is running the 11th edition of Gwanza, a month long exhibition of contemporary African photography capturing life through images with this year’s theme focusing on women.

The 2010 edition of Gwanza explores women’s experiences as they strive to succeed in a male dominated world. The exhibition also highlights women’s multiple roles as mothers, wives, business people and activists through photography.
National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe Curator, Raphael Chikukwa says the images on show challenge the viewers to reconsider preconceived ideas demeaning women hence the theme “Women Trajectories.”


“The photos on exhibition are showing women’s lives and try to challenge us to see women differently…..and 80% of these photographs were taken by women.’
Gwanza has become one of the biggest photographic exhibitions in Zimbabwe and this year’s edition which was officially opened on Thursday the 12th of this month is running till the 5th of September. Among the exhibitors are photographers from Ethiopia, South Africa, Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Malawi, Germany and Zimbabwe.
