african armyworm.jpgThe outbreak of armyworm in the country continues to spread with fresh reports in greater Harare and Bulawayo.

The head of the Plant Protection Unit under the Department of Research and Specialist Services, Dr Godfrey Chikwenhere says the unit has moved into the affected areas in Chitungwiza and Rangemore plots in Bulawayo where  chemicals are being sprayed to kill the armyworm.

Following the widespread outbreaks of the armyworm, the unit has since begun assessing the effectiveness of the Carbaryl chemical used to fight the armyworm, adding that they have accessed US$400 000 from treasury for additional chemicals and protective clothing for the extension workers.

Dr Chikwenhere noted that this season’s outbreak is serious as the last worst outbreak was recorded in the 1992-93 farming season but they are managing.

As of last Monday, about 400 hectares of maize had been destroyed throughout the country but the unit is still to compile new statistics following reports of new outbreaks.

Mashonaland Central Province has been worst affected by the armyworm outbreak since it was reported last month.
