african armyworm.jpgA severe armyworm outbreak has hit Mashonaland Central province, with preliminary reports indicating this could be the most devastating occurrence of the pest in recent years.

In an interview, Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Director of Research, Dr James Mguni, said some of the affected famers lost maize and sorghum that had reached knee level.

He said the ministry has since dispatched special teams to assess the damage with a view to contain the outbreak.

He urged farmers to remain calm, saying adequate chemicals are available to fight the pest.

The affected areas in Mashonaland Central are Mushumbi Pools, Angwa Chitsungo, Mahuwe, Muzarabani and Mount Darwin.
