Harare Mayor, Mr. Muchadei Masunda confirmed that the city’s emergency preparedness and response mechanism leaves a lot to be desired. He said a huge capital injection is required to revamp Harare’s emergency preparedness.

“We need to have a clear programme that will revamp the emergency services and it’s embarrassing that as a city we only have four ambulances whilst we have 50 health institutions,” said Mayor Masunda.

Experts say the failure by the City of Harare to acquire new ambulances is a case of misplaced priorities, arguing that even small private institutions are able to purchase ambulances.

Besides the depleted ambulance services, the City of Harare’s fire brigade services are also down with four fire tenders out of the 57 operational, while some hydrants which have been vandalised are yet to be repaired.
