Algeria were crowned champions of Africa following a 1-0 win over Senegal in a fiercely contested encounter at the Cairo International Stadium this evening.
Baghdad Bounedjah’s second minute strike was enough to hand Algeria their second African Cup of Nations crown, 19 years after their first in 1990, while relegating Senegal to second place.
Senegal, who have never won the competition, were awarded a penalty for handball in the second half but it was overturned after a VAR review.
Senegal’s players collapsed on the pitch in tears at the final whistle.
Senegal, making only their second appearance in the final since 2002, dominated for large periods but struggled to make the most of their possession.
Algeria had a wonderful campaign at this year’s Afcon edition where they went on to win the title without tasting defeat.
