The 6th edition of the National Road Safety Journalistic Awards ceremony was held in Harare last night, amid calls for journalists to advance the message of safe road usage to reduce road traffic deaths.
The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Cde Joel Biggie Matiza said the country continues to lose an important asset, its human capital through unnecessary road carnage and the media has an important role to play in educating citizens on safe road usage.
“Bribery on the country’s roads as offenders try to escape traffic offence punishment is a cancer that should be totally eliminated,” Minister Matiza said.
Coming to the awards, ZBC’s Mashonaland West Bureau Chief, Regis Mhako scooped two awards; the Best Road Safety Television Reporter Award and the overall prize.
Other winners included Elias Mushoma and Lee Maidza as Photographer of the Year Winner and Runner Up respectively, as well as Tinotenda Chatikobo who was the 2nd runner up Road Student Reporter of the Year.
The awards received overwhelming submissions and celebrated journalist’s works in advancing safe road usage.
