The country has recorded an increase in road traffic accidents during the 2018 festive season with 1 590 accidents being recorded between the 15th and the 30th of December 2018 compared to the same period in 2017 which had 1 405 indicating an increase by 185 respectively.

The 2018 statistics indicate that the number of people killed dropped by 9 during the same period where 120 deaths were recorded in 2017 and 111 deaths recorded during the same period in 2018.

According to assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi Deputy National police spokesperson, most of the accidents were attributed to a number of factors, among them human error.

The total numbers of injured people decreased by 11 and 664 injuries were recorded in 2018, while 2017 had 675 injuries.
