The First Lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa says abortion contributes to erosion of social fabric and leave women traumatised hence it is every citizen’s responsibility uphold the norms and values of our country.

This came out at the launch of a book on the dangers of abortion at Mabelreign Girls High School in Harare today (Monday), which comes at a time Zimbabwe is facing serious challenges of abortion among teenagers

The issue of abortion has stirred a lot of debate among citizens with about 65 300 abortions having been recorded in 2016, translating to about 17 abortions in every 1 000 women.

The First Lady said abortions are against Christian values and leave women traumatised.

“Our children are gifts from God and we must protect them. The issue of abortion is mainly because people do not want responsibility. When a girl has been impregnated, let’s support her, let’s not chase our daughters. This book is a beautiful book that tells this story in a way that opens our eyes,” said Amai Mnangagwa.

The author of the book titled: “Abortion has Consequences”, Imelda Tsumba, said her wish is for every child to be well informed on the dangers of abortion which are at the core of her message.

“I wrote this book with children at heart i want them to understand the consequences of abortion,” said the author.

Students who have read the book said it delivers a powerful message that appeal to their generation.

Statistics indicate that about three percent of people who sought services for post abortion in 2016 died from complications while 19 percent had severe complications.
