Manyame Queens and its senior men team won the top honours after dominating the National Open Season Handball Tournament held in Mutare.
A 10-4 victory over Black Rhinos in the final ensured Manyame Queens were the victors in the National Open Season Handball Tournament.
In the semi finals, Manyame Queens had dispatched Bulawayo Polytechnic 11-1.
The men’s team also reigned supreme as they beat Mutare Polytechnic 8 – 7 in the final after having seen off, Falcons in the semi-finals.
“We are happy that we have won as the competition was very stiff. We have been practicing hard as a team and we are proud to have made our mark at the tournament,” said Manyame Queens representative.
Daramombe High School underscored its dominance in the junior girls and boys sections.
The handball tournament which saw professional teams, tertiary institutions as well as schools participate, has been seen as key in promoting the sport and attracting sponsorship.
“We want to attract corporates to sponsor handball. We are aiming to increase awareness on the sport and launch a vibrant junior policy,” said Zimbabwe Handball Federation President Mr Stewart Sanhewe.
“As a nation, we are happy that sporting disciplines such as handball are also increasing their presence. We want to have our teams also participate at global sporting showcases and it begins with such tournaments,” said Deputy Director in the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture Mrs Nomsa Mpofu Moyo.
The Zimbabwe Handball Federation has a number of ambitious plans that include participation at the 2024 Olympics in France, turning Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex into the sport’s high performance centre and hosting international events for clubs and national teams.
