Veteran runners Mike Fokoroni and Samukeliso Moyo were crowned winners of the Old Mutual Harare 42km marathon held in the capital today (Sunday) in the men and women’s category respectively.

Portifa Dombojena the defending champion of the Old Mutual Harare 42km marathon found the going tough in the men’s race after facing stiff competition.

Veteran Fokoroni claimed first position after completing the race in 2 hours 21minutes 37 seconds, Chinyoka came second in 2 hours 21 minutes and 49 seconds while Lyno Muchena came third after completing the race in 2 hours 21 minutes 55 seconds.

Fokoroni said his work rate is a motivation as he is preparing for the Two Oceans marathon set for South Africa from the 31st of March while the winner in the ladies section Samukeliso Moyo said the race could have been won by youngsters since she is a slow runner who capitalises on endurance.

Moyo finished her race in 3 hours 1 minute 12 seconds.

The marathon is held as part of efforts to promote a healthy wellbeing according to CABS managing director Simon Hammond.

This year’s event was bigger with 1 500 athletes taking part compared to 900 who lined up at the starting line last year.
