Mashonaland East Province has joined the rest of the country in commemorating the World Cancer Day with calls for a multi-sectoral approach to fight the deadly disease.

The World Cancer Day provincial commemorations held yesterday at Marondera Provincial Hospital started with a march from the central business district to the hospital.

Stakeholders who attended the event spoke on the need to unite in the fight against the pandemic which has wreaked havoc in communities.

Director of Pathology in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Maxwell Hove said cancer has become a public health threat which requires a multi-sectoral approach to fight it.

Mashonaland East Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Cde David Musabayana and the Provincial National AIDS Council (NAC) Coordinator, Dr Wilfred Dube said the province has not been spared by the pandemic which has killed people silently.

As part of community mobilisation and sensitisation, NAC and the Ministry of Health and Child Care are set to launch cancer training, screening and management programmes in all the 9 districts of Mashonaland East Province this year.

The commemorations were held under the theme: ‘We Can, I Can -Together We Can.’
