The government has taken over the construction of Sivomo Craft Centre in Nkayi with the objective of making it operational in the next two months as part of the community development programme.

The Sivomo community in Nkayi took the initiative to construct a craft centre in 2006, from which they could do craft making and generate income.

However, due to economic challenges, the 25-member club which led the project was forced to suspend the construction more than four years ago.

The feeling among members was that their project would flourish if they got a partner to complete the structure and assist them in marketing their products.

Women and Youth Affairs Minister Cde Sithembiso Nyoni said her ministry will assist the community in the completion of the craft centre, which will now be included under the projects to be fulfilled within 100 days.

“So we will help you because research has proved that crafts are the number one revenue generator for women. Lupane women agreed that they will partner us and they will be coming here to train women then link them to the market so that they are able to sell their artifacts,” said Cde Nyoni.

Some of the outstanding work at the craft centre includes roofing, fitting windows and doors, fencing and building toilets.

The project forms part of the government`s objective to promote value addition and beneficiation as an empowerment component in communities.
