Service delivery for Masvingo City Council continues to be affected by the ever-increasing debt owed by residents and industry.

The debt currently stands at US$42.5 million.

Of the owed amount, US$16 million is owed by residents, US$22 million by government institutions and the remaining US$3.7 million is owed by commerce and industry.

Masvingo City treasurer Mr Danister Jori says the failure by residents and institutions to pay their bills is adversely affecting council’s ability to maintain roads, most which are in a deplorable state.

Mr Jori says council has since engaged debt collectors to recover some of the money owed to council.

According to the City Treasury Department about 800 households have not attempted to service their bills since 2013.
