Chief Justice Luke Malaba has sworn in 8 new judges, six men and two women to the High Court bench in a move expected to reduce the backlog of cases at the superior court.

The eight judges sworn in are Justice Philda Muzofa, James Thompson Mabhikwa, Isaac Muzenda, Munyanyiso Wamambo, Slyvia Chirau, Benjamin Chikowero, Pisirai Kwenda and Jacob Manzunzu.

In an interview, Judge President Justice George Chiweshe said the swearing in of new judges comes at a time the High Court has a backlog of cases that needs to be reduced.

The eight new judges brings the number of High Court judges to 38 and the move is in line with the drive to open new high courts such as the recently established Masvingo High Court and the Mutare High Court expected to open next year.
