A call has been made for the country to embrace geographical information systems (GIS) in the health and environment fields that will assist in the analysis of links between the environmental exposures and health outcomes.

While there has been extensive use of other information technologies in the public health and environment fields, the use of GIS is limited.

Environmental health scientist, Fadziso Dupwa said GIS are used among other things to analyse the spread of infectious and chronic diseases, protect the public against environmental hazards, analyzing traffic injuries by location and respond to disasters in real time.

In Africa, health is largely determined by environmental factors which vary greatly in space as such public health practice needs timely information in the event of an epidemic.

The government agencies around the world collect data on human health including routine demographic and health surveys, as well as environmental hazards including point source pollution, water quality, and air quality.
