Seven armed robbers have been sentenced to 321 years in jail following a recent spate of car hijackings, robberies and assaults in Gwanda, Beitbridge, Masvingo and Bulawayo.
Three Bulawayo regional magistrates sentenced Nyashadzashe Hove (34), Bornface Vutete (38), Simbarashe Shumba (31), Terrence Sibanda (23), Tanaka Mboti (22), Timothy Munhare (31) and Handsome Sibanda (29) to 321 years imprisonment combined.
According to the Prosecutor, Mr Tinashe Dzipe, the robbers started their act from the beginning of August to October 2017 and on the 10 counts of robbery, they used illegal and toy guns that they smuggled in from South Africa.
Mr Dzipe said the robbers stole cars, cell phones, cash and other valuables.
Upon attacking the victims, the robbers intimidated them by pointing a gun at them and left them tied up, he said.
The robbers said they were driven by poverty since most of them were family bread winners, thus they committed these crimes.
On their last robbery, they invaded a Glo Petroleum garage, tied up the attendants and stole cash and jewellery.
The ZRP Criminal Investigation Department received a tip off of their whereabouts and tracked them.
