health1.jpgMore than 36 people in some Harare western suburbs have been hospitalised after succumbing to a new type of diarrhoea called shigella.

The Director of Harare City Council Health Department, Doctor Prosper Chonzi, said while investigations are still underway to ascertain the cause of the outbreak they have since established that the disease is a new type of diarrhoea called shigella.

 

Most of the affected are currently receiving treatment at Beatrice infectious hospital.

Shigellosis is an infectious disease caused by a group of bacteria called Shigella.

Those infected with Shigella develop bloody diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.

The Shigella bacteria pass from one infected person to the next. Shigella infections may also be acquired from eating contaminated food.

Water may become contaminated if sewage runs into it.
