A sporting extravaganza that featured various sporting disciplines, among them soccer, netball, volleyball and darts, was held in Chipinge this weekend as teams competed to book  place at the Manicaland Minister of State tournament finals to be held in Mutare mid next month.

35 teams that made it at the ward and constituency competitions competed at the district level over the weekend.

Chipinge District Sport and Recreation Officer, Martin Sithole said the tournaments being held in the province’s seven districts comprising the open and under-20 schools category have been successful and are part of vibrant initiatives to increase mass participation in sport and recreation in Manicaland.

Sithole said the tournament is important in promoting sport development and recreation in the province and nurturing talent, adding that the competition also included teams from tertiary institutions, uniformed forces and the community.
