The Chiredzi Civil Protection Department has identified 325 families as victims of the recent flash floods which destroyed property and infrastructure worth thousands of dollars.

This was revealed by the Minister of State for Masvingo Province, Cde Ezra Chadzamira when he visited the area to assess damage and meet the victims.

Cde Chadzamira blamed Chiredzi Town Council for poor town planning by allocating residential stands in wetlands as well as failing to provide proper drainage systems, a development which resulted in houses and property being drenched in water on Thursday morning.

“It is unfortunate that many people were affected by these floods. The local authority is to be blame for poorly planning the town and must be held accountable for the loss incurred by residents to some extent. This is just a disaster which emanated from the poor planning of the local authority. How can you sale stands which you can see are in the water course?” he said.

The affected families however appealed for government’s intervention to ensure the issue of floods is permanently resolved.

Although no deaths were recorded, the incident left the affected residents traumatised as some had to be  rescued by uniformed forces.
