The Zimbabwe Republic Police has released names of 3 of the 8 victims killed in the Mazowe mine explosion on Sunday.
The names of three victims are James Fulakezi aged 30 years from Gokwe, Mbwana Juma aged 28 years from Chegutu and Zorodza Maganga aged 29 years of Mahuwe, Mbire district.
ZRP Mashonaland Central Acting Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Petros Masikati said the bodies of the deceased have already been collected by their relatives while more names will be released on Wednesday.
The Minister of State for Mashonaland Central Province Senator Monica Mavhunga sent her condolences to bereaved families while urging people to desist from illegal mining activities.
“We urge people not to go into these big mines because they do not know what is inside. We also urge the Ministry of Mines to take measures to protect miners. We are very sorry for the families that lost their loved ones,” she said.
Sunday’s explosion at Mazowe Mine has forced government to take corrective action to prevent more deaths at Mazowe Mine and Shamva Mine owned by Metallon Zimbabwe which has since closed down the two mines.
