35 teams grace Minister’s tourney

A sporting extravaganza that featured various sporting disciplines, among them soccer, netball, volleyball and darts, was held in Chipinge this weekend as teams competed to book  place at the Manicaland Minister of State tournament finals to be held in Mutare mid next month. 35 teams that made it at the ward and constituency competitions competed at the district level over the weekend. The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) music outfit, Crocodile Sounds have launched a nine track album titled Garwe Rauya at a colourful event held Harare. It was an event not to miss as the new musical outfit launched its debut album. Judging by the performance at the launch, the future is bright for the ZNA musical band as those who attended temporarily lost themselves in the Sungura vibe. Govt works on gender desks capacitation

The Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development says it is working on ensuring gender desks in both public and private institutions are capacitated to perform their duties. Following the establishment of gender desks both in public and private institutions to act as focal points for gender mainstreaming and to address gender concerns, the Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development has bemoaned lack of adequate financial support for the desks to perform their duties. Harare hosts women sports festival

The plight of the girl child on the sporting arena came under the spotlight at the Women and Girls Sports Festival held at Prince Edward High School in Harare on Saturday. The festival ended with a forum where gender based violence was a key issue. Young girls are often susceptible to abuse even on the sports arena. Zambia National Olympic Committee executive member, Brenda Chipande highlighted the need to create a conducive environment for the girl child to participate freely on the sports arena. Car prizes at Old Mutual quiz competition

The finals of the Old Mutual National High School Quiz competition were held in Harare recently with winning schools walking away with various prizes including cars and laptops. The bragging rights of who has the sharpest minds amongst the country’s high schools were finally bestowed on John Tallach after the school came top in last Thursday’s competition. The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Professor Paul Mavima hailed Old Mutual Zimbabwe for sponsoring the competition, saying it complements the country’s educational curriculum. The competition was launched by Old Mutual in 1985 and Old Mutual Zimbabwe CEO, Mr Jonas Mushosho said they are proud to be associated with the competition as it goes a long way in sharpening learners’ minds as well as preparing them for their future careers.
