The 3 on 3 basketball version is gaining momentum in Zimbabwe with some impressive performances being recorded by the country’s teams at regional and international tournaments.
A deliberate emphasis on the style has seen the Zimbabwe under-18 men and women scooping gold at the 3 on 3 Young Lions Cup that ended in Botswana this Monday.
The event organised by the Federation of International Basketball (FIBA) is part of the sport controlling body’s drive towards promoting the 3 on 3 version.
The 3×3 is a quick and exciting basketball version that sees 3 players apiece tussling it out in a half court.
Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) Secretary General, Joe Mujuru, believes the version of the sport can only get to higher levels in the country as it best suites the Zimbabwean type of game.
BUZ has also laid out plans to ensure the version is played across all educational levels, with NUST successfully representing the continent at the World Universities Games in China, the team scooped gold.
In 2015, Zimbabwe also came tops at the Africa Youth Games in the 3 point shooting contest of the 3 on 3 in Botswana.
