The Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) through the ANSA independent panel of adjudicators has unveiled 11 categories of the 2017 Annual National Sport Awards (ANSA) nominees.
The SRC says it values the contributions made by the public, national sport associations and sport writers who contributed a lot in coming up with the list of nominees to be honoured at a premier event aimed at celebrating sporting excellence.
Speaking at the 2017 ANSA nominees’ event, SRC acting director general Joseph Muchechetere said the role of the SRC is to facilitate the process in honouring sport persons.
Announcing the nominees acting judges panel chairperson Witness Magulane said the adjudication panel has terms of reference that it adheres to in coming up with the nominees.
Some of the sport persons vying for honours on the 13th of December event include bodybuilding duo of Helen Costa Sinclair, Selina Manuel and athlete Rutendo Nyahora who are competing in the sportswoman of the year category.
The karate trio of Brian Chiringa, Samson Muripo and Nyasha Machaza are tussling it out in the sportsman of the year category.
Rowing’s Christine Johnson, rugby’s Gilbert Nyamutsamba and Heath Streak are eyeing the coach of the year accolade.
The Zimbabwe cricket team, Kenneth Raynopr and Keegan Smith and the sevens rugby team made it into nominees for the team of the year category.
Athletes from a total of 17 categories will be honoured though the six category nominees are yet to be announced.
Some of the categories to be announced include the sport administration of the year, sport development of the year, women and sports award and the special acknowledgement award.
