Stakeholders in Wedza have plans to establish a soccer team that will compete for honours in the country’s football leagues.
The myth that soccer can only be played at high level in the urban areas should be a thing of the past as there is more talent in the rural areas said Zanu PF secretary for education Engineer Anthony Parehwa who sponsored a soccer and netball tournament in Wedza North to the tune of $8000.
Cde Parehwa said there is need to create a team that can fight for honours in the domestic leagues.
Zviyedzo Arufeto from the Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture said sport needs to be taken seriously as it has become a source of livelihood.
A total of 96 teams took part in the tournament from the preliminary stages.
In soccer Sheffield beat Munzwa 2-0 to lift the trophy while Tongogara beat Shaka Bullets 3-1 for the bronze medal.
In the netball category, Tongogara dismissed Sheffield 23-16 while Iamba edged Jongwe Stars 14-10 to settle for the wooden spoon.
