Zimbabwe’s telecommunications regulator, POTRAZ is in talks with local mobile phone companies over a tariff review to be implemented with effect from January next year.

Official sources in the telecommunications industry say the negotiations are aimed at coming up with a tariff structure that takes into account operating economic conditions.

Contacted for comment on Tuesday, POTRAZ Director General, Dr Gift Machengete confirmed the development, saying there is a possibility tariffs may be reduced.

Dr Machengete also said compliance by the mobile phone operators to an infrastructure sharing plan is still in progress.

“The plan is not dead and all the firms are taking necessary steps to ensure success,” he said.

The review on mobile phone tariff structures is being made when the sector is experiencing an increase in subscribers despite limited disposable incomes.
