Giants maintained their pole position in the Bulawayo Basketball League despite a narrow loss to fellow title aspirants, Mavericks in an exciting duel over the weekend.

Jordon Davids was the toast of the day with a well garnered 20 points in a tensely contested men’s encounter that saw Mavericks edging Giants 64 – 63.

Giants lead the pack with 10 points off their 6 matches, closely followed by Highlanders and Mavericks who are both on 9 points although the latter have played a game less.

The weekend also saw Highlanders dropping a perfect opportunity to shoot to the top of the men’s log as they were beaten 73 – 65 by NUST A in a match top scored by the evergreen Andile Chirinda with 33 points.

In another men’s match, NUST B narrowly beat lsu 36 – 34 to bring themselves 3 points off the log leaders.

Other title contenders, See Oilers, NUST A, LSU and NUST B are not far off with 6 rounds of matches having been played.

In women’s encounters, joint log leaders, Southern Mavericks dismantled Lakers Juniors 104 – 29 as red hot Sibongile Mnkandla was unstoppable with 35 points on the day, while NUST powered past Highlanders 61 – 16.

Pretty Tinarwo inspired Lakers Seniors were too good for Angels as they got the better of them 99 – 18, while Charmaine Chirinda top-scored for Mavericks with 24 points in a 138 – 11 victory over Highlanders.

Table toppers in the women’s category, Mavericks and NUST, who are on 9 points, are closely followed by Lakers Seniors on 8 points while Angels and Lakers Juniors are on 7.
