Government says it is high time farmers utilise Zimbabwe’s unique climatic conditions that allows for crop production all year round to ensure food self sufficiency.

Countries such as Israel have turned vast areas of desert into agricultural hubs with crops such as wheat, sorghum and corn being grown while fruits like avocados, guavas, mangoes and grapes have also found space on foreign shelves.

 For Zimbabwe, the story is that of a country endowed with a climate able to sustain crops all year round that is an envy of many countries all over the world.

For the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development (cropping production) Cde Davis Marapira there is no reason why Zimbabwe should spend millions of dollars importing crops that can be grown locally throughout the year.

If the success of the country’s command agriculture programme is anything to go by, then the goal to ensure the country is food secure can indeed be attained if all productive land is fully utilised.
