Prisoners from across the country are receiving a rare treat of meeting visitors who include friends and relatives during the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) family week.

The entrance into a prison by a convicted person was previously viewed as an end to one’s social reputation but a massive rehabilitation drive by the ZPCS has seen a change of perception over the years.

Of late, some come out of prisons as musicians, preachers, carpenters and others obtain several educational and professional qualifications while serving time, thanks to the rehabilitation exercise the service introduced.

For the rehabilitation exercise to be complete, ZPCS Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Principal Correctional Officer, Garainashe Moyo said there is need for society’s involvement hence the family week concept.

In Bulawayo the family week was with a difference as prisoners at the Khami Prison complex got a chance to mix and mingle with veteran musicians like Madlela Skobokobo and several men of cloth.

The family week, which began on Saturday, will end this Friday and in Bulawayo, it will be preceded by the Prison Day commemorations to be held at White City Stadium this Saturday.
