The National Social Security Authority (NSSA) has suspended payouts for more than 17 000 pensioners who are not registered under their new biometric registration programme.

More than 149 000 pensioners have been registered under the NSSA biometric registration exercise which began in November last year and ended on 30 September.

The process is meant to ensure that well deserving pensioners are the ones receiving their entitlements.

NSSA marketing and public relations executive, Mr Tendai Mutseyekwa said 17 864 pensioners were not enrolled and their payouts will be suspended until they register under the new system.

Previously pensioners were using their life certificates as proof to receive their payouts which were renewed on yearly basis.

Starting this month the authority has increased allowances for pensioners from US$60 to US$80.
