The Zimbabwe Veterinary Students Association vaccinated more than 300 dogs in Makoni Chitungwiza during the rabbies day campaign held on Saturday (yesterday).
The World Rabbies day is an international awareness campaign, which is observed every year on September 28 to raise awareness about rabbies prevention and to highlight progress in defeating the disease.
The vaccination initiative which is part of the rabbies day campaign is aimed at educating the public on the importance of rabbies vaccination and the dangers of the disease said University of Zimbabwe faculty of veterinary science students Ruvimbo Mugodoro and Zanele Matatu.
Rabbies is a serious disease that is highly prevalent within Zimbabwe and has the potential of spreading to humans.
Humans are infected through wounds and saliva from infected animals.
However, vaccination of animals against rabbies has proved successful in control of the disease.
The 2017 theme is ‘”Rabbies: Zero by 30”.
