Athletes who excelled in netball and volleyball at the ongoing rebranded National Youth Games have been identified and will immediately be incorporated into the national teams in preparation for the forthcoming international fixtures.

Volleyball and netball team leaders have already identified the players who are expected to join their counterparts when the national teams prepare for regional and international sporting competitions.

President of the Zimbabwe Netball Association Leticia Chipandu said the best players have been identified for the under 20 national team which will soon troop into into camp in preparation for the region five games to be held in Botswana in 2018.

“We have also identified under 23 players that we are going to beef up into the national team. I have realised that with young talent, they bring a bit of more life to the senior teams so we are just going to do that. Actually this is in preparation to the games that we are going to be taking part in in Namibia from the 6th to the 10th of September. We have been preparing for those games and am happy to say that we were able to select fresh players,” she said.

National Youth Games volleyball director, Brian Emmanuel confirmed that these games have exposed a lot of talent which had never had the opportunity to play on hard surface and standard facilities.

“In all the two age groups, the under 18 and the under 23, we have managed to identify talent using the coaches we have here who have been working with the national teams,” said Emmanuel.

At school level, Harare Metropolitan, Manicaland and Midlands are some of the provinces which have been performing well in the volleyball fixtures although the log standings reveal that most of the teams are one point apart.
