As the rebranded National Youth Games draw to a conclusion, organisers of the sport of swimming have bemoaned the timing of the competition as being not the best to promote top performances as most athletes will be off season.

Only 51 swimmers from 5 provinces participated in the games as the athletes are just coming from the off season break.

To further compound the situation, the water temperatures that stood at 17 degrees was too cold and not concussive something the swimmers indicated affected their performance.

National executive member of the sport’s controlling body, Lorna Riley however noted the special role the games could play in developing swimming with better communication between stakeholders.

Despite fielding a weaker side, hosts Bulawayo proved to be too powerful over its competitors from Mashonaland West, Masvingo, Manicaland and Harare provinces scooping accolades in almost all the races competed in.
