Stop illegal cotton exports, farmers warned

Government has warned farmers that are illegally exporting cotton out of the country and is now considering controlling the crop. Following support extended to farmers through Cottco last summer some farmers are now illegally exporting the white gold to neighbouring countries after being lured by cash payments. Agriculture Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Minister, Dr Joseph Made raised concern over the actions which threaten to derail the cotton sector revival. 400 000 households received free cotton inputs through the Cotton Company of Zimbabwe in the 2016/17 summer season under the Presidential Well Wishers Inputs Scheme. Fire kills wife, injures husband in Chibuwe

Tragedy hit a Chibuwe couple this Wednesday when their house burst into flames due to fuel stored in the house. The 23 year old wife was burnt to death while the husband is battling for life in hospital. Eye witnesses say the fire incident took place around 9:30 on Wednesday morning when the deceased Liana Chikakasi lit a charcoal stove close to their bedroom which ignited fuel that was stored in the house. It is alleged the husband Joseph Chifana had opened up one fuel container as he wanted to sell the commodity to a prospecting customer. The wife died in the inferno while the husband who had earlier managed to escape was seriously burnt after he returned into the house to try and rescue his burning wife. Sorrow has engulfed the community where villagers and relatives are yet to come to terms with the tragic incident. Others say those dealing with fuel without operating licenses should be arrested to curb such eventualities. Chifana who is said to be in a critical condition was taken to Chipinge hospital before being referred to Mutare General Hospital while the remains of Chikakasi’s body were taken to Chipinge district hospital for post mortem. Kamativi horror crash kills 11

Eleven people have died in a road traffic accident which occurred at 4am, Thursday morning near the Ministry of Transport workshop in Kamativi. Ten died on the spot and the 11th one died at Kamativi clinic while 119 were injured. The accident occurred when the passengers heard a loud burst resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle. The 10-tonne truck was carrying 130 passengers from Siabuwa, Binga to Hwange where they were scheduled to attend a church conference. President Robert Mugabe has declared Mbuya Maud Muzenda a national heroine. Mbuya Muzenda was the wife of the late national hero and Vice President Dr Simon Vengai Muzenda and she died on Tuesday at the Avenues Clinic in Harare at the age of 88. The Minister of Defence, Dr Sydney Sekeramayi, who is also a Zanu PF Politburo member delivered the message to mourners gathered at the Muzenda homestead in Chisipite, Harare.
