The Minister of Sport and Recreation, Makhosini Hlongwane says sport associations should deploy pro-active representatives on international federations for the various sporting codes enshrined in the National Sport Policy.

The minister was speaking in Harare during a colourful dinner held in honour of the visiting World Chess Confederation President, Kirsan Ilyumizhinov.

“Zimbabwe will bring more sport ambassadors who are luminaries in an effort to inspire and promote other local sport codes,” said Minister Hlongwane.

In response, Iyumizhinov assuring the country that the 188-member countries in the World Chess Confederation will not hesitate to give Zimbabwe the nod to stage a major tournament considering the fact that previous tournaments have been held in other continents and never in Africa.

African Chess Confederation President, Lewis Ncube said the forthcoming elections will give direction on the submission of a joint Zimbabwe – Zambia 2021 Chess World Cup bid, with Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) Board Chair, Edward Siwela noting that the propagation of chess in schools, villages and homes will eliminate a mentality that chess is an elite and urban game.

The SRC boss believes Zimbabwe will score a first in sport if such moves are spread to all 59 sporting codes.

Also present at the dinner was the Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Edgar Nbwembwe, national sport associations heads and corporates while musician, Bob Nyabinde and his band kept the delegates entertained.
