Defending under 18 volleyball champions, Harare Metropolitan Province opened their campaign with a bold statement at the rebranded National Youth Games in Hwange.

The girls put up a spectacular display to dispatch their opponents, Mashonaland East 3-nil, making it their second victory after beating Matabeleland North Province 2-nil in an earlier match.

Harare team coach, Enos Zimbizi expressed satisfaction that his team is playing according to instruction.

“We realised that our opponents are much shorter than our girls and so we had to take advantage of that and it worked well, so we are very happy and we are confident that we will also win the remaining matches,” he said.

Team Mashonaland East, which had all its six members drawn from one school in Mudzi, felt the competition against Team Harare, which featured a pick of the best players, was unassailable.

“We did well under the circumstances because if you look at our team, the players are just coming from one school so we did not have the chance to pick the best players from other schools. So we are happy, though of course we could have done better,” said Blessing Hwingwiri, the Mashonaland East coach.

In other games, Mashonaland East lost 2-nil to Manicaland Province but took off its misfortunes on the host province beating them 3- nil.

The next volley ball fixtures will be held on Thursday.
